FASU GAMES : UG AND UDS MAKE GHANA PROUD


University of Ghana (U.G) and University for Development Studies ( U.D.S) made the country proud as they exerted a very Wonderful and a Scintillating performance in the just ended FASU games.

The 9th edition of the Federation of African Sports University (FASU) games was held at the Mekelle university situated in the city of Mekelle in Ethiopia.

The games run within 5 days starting from the 2nd day of July to the 6th of July.

58 Universities took part in such games and 37 won medals with UG having 7 medals (5 Golds, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze) whilst UDS accumulated 13 medals (7 Golds, 4 Silver, 2 Bronze)

UDS was the 4th ranked team amongst the schools whereas UG became 5th.

The 1st position after the tabulation of the results happened to be Ugandan University of Ndejje. This University had a quantum of 19 medals (10 Gold, 4 Silver, 5 Bronze).

University of Johannesburg in South Africa was the 1st run up after having 12 medals (9 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze) whilst University of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia accumulated 25 medals (8 Gold, 6 Silver, 11 Bronze

Breakdown of the results;

In the athletics competition, UDS’s Elizabeth Azuure was 3rd in the 10,000m women event behind athletes from Ethiopia who were 1st and 2nd respectively.

Christiana Bakika of UDS won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles women ahead of Abobi Calavi of University of Benin and an athlete from the Makelle University of Ethiopia.

Also, Agyei Salomey and Eric Annobil of UDS won silver in the Women's 800m and gold in the Men’s 400m hurdles respectively

Another clean swoop was the 200m men event where UDS's Sarfo Ansah won gold whilst his compatriot Derrick Sarkodie took bronze in the same event, the silver medal went to the Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa.

On the other hand, University of Ghana badminton team won 2 gold and 1 silver, the tennis team also won 2 gold medals and 1 bronze while the basketball team also successfully defended the title they won 2 years ago in South Africa.
