John Peter Amewu, Energy Minister, has clarified that the recent power outages was not because of low generation capacity. Rather, it was as a result of some technical challenges.
For some weeks now, parts of Kumasi and Accra have been experiencing inconsistent power supply, raising questions among the public as to whether the country is returning to the days of 'dumsor': a widely known nickname for inconsistent power supply.
In clarifying that Ghana is not going back to the era of 'dumsor', John Amewu explained that the problem was associated with the supply of gas to some installed power plants, especially the Karpower plant at Tema in Accra. The Ministry, he continued, is therefore planning to relocate the Karpower plant from Tema to Takoradi to ensure constant gas supply to the power directly.
Apart from that, there is the need to find more light crude oil. The light crude oil will be used in place of the gas if there is a shortage in the gas.
John Amewu concluded that when all these measures are put in place, full power will be restored and Ghanaians will not experience erratic power supply in the country.
