Energy Minister sacked over AMERI Deal

President Akufo Addo has relieved the Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko from duty following controversies over Africa and Middle East Resources Investment (AMERI) saga.
A statement according to the Director of Communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin indicates that, Mr. Boagye Agyarko has been ask to hand over his office to the Lands and Natural Resources minister, John Peter Amewu to act until new appointment effected.
In the statement, the president wished the sacked minister well in his future endeavours without pointing out any reason for his sack.

It would be recalled that, Mr. Agyarko has been subjected to criticisms following the renegotiated Ameri deal throughout last week. The renegotiated deal which civil society organisations including IMANI, Africa Center for Energy Policy(ACEP), Institute of Energy Security (IES) among others has described as worse than the original $510 million deal was sent to parliament under certificate of urgency for approval.
But the House deferred its deliberation on the contract due to concerns over the cost and value for money.

The new agreement was to extend the current five - year deal with Ameri Energy which is currently operating a 300 Megawatts emergency power plant in Ghana to 15 years and bring onboard a new company Mytilineous International Trading Company from Greece to manage the plant for the period.

The past government, NDC in 2015 signed a contract with Africa and Middle East Resources Investment Group (AMERI) Energy, to rent the 300MW of emergency power from AMERI, to solve the country's power crisis popularly known as "Dumsor".
